Black Rice + Vegan Soap

September 8, 2009

Last night Jason and I had dinner with our good friend Johnny Misfit of the Silent Scones. He made up an awesome, multi-veg stir fry with broccoli, chard, garlic, peppers, farmstand green beans, and served it over something neither of us has had before–BLACK RICE! It was delicious. The black rice, sometimes called purple rice or Forbidden Rice (Lotus Brand), was easier to cook than wild rice and had great texture. I hear it’s loaded with iron and fiber, too. Although I haven’t checked into the nutrition stats, anything that naturally has that much color is probably real good for you! I’m thinking it would make a great rice salad or a bed for some curry.

Johnny also introduced us to Joe, a vegan soap artisan from Ethically Engineered. Check out the company’s inventive made-in-Chicago products on etsy or next week at the Renegade Craft Fair.

Thanks Johnny!
