Vegan Game Changer – Spicy Italian Meatless Sausages

April 20, 2010

First, here is the Spicy Italian Vegetarian Sausage RECIPE from Everyday Dish TV. These changed our kitchen. Everyday Dish TV is a site to bookmark. We first made these vegan sausages while co-hosting the 2009 HWC Film night. They were gone in a flash and even the meat eaters gave them 2 thumbs up.

These sausages have become a staple in our kitchen. They are great on a bun, cut up and mixed into pasta sauce, or as thinly sliced “lunch meat”. You may never want to buy the packaged ones again. It is awesome that you can make a dozen sausages for the price of 4 at the store. Most of all, these vegan sausages are fun to make!

Play around with the spices. If you research for sausage recipes, you can get an idea of the different spices that work. I’ve never added the fake chicken seasoning listed in the Everyday Dish recipe. Sometimes I add some tomato paste and/or mustard to the liquid to give them more color. I have used potato flour, rye flour and wheat flour to substitute for chickpea flour in the recipe. Vital Wheat Gluten is the key ingredient here… and the amount of liquid.

As a product of our excitement are 2 new VL webisodes featuring these meatless links! Thanks again Everyday Dish TV for the inspiration.

The first video below was filmed in January 2010 on a frigid 10°F evening in Humboldt Park, Chicago. Our friends Jessi and Patrick were screening their video installment, proximity: the closeness of apartness, on a giant screen through the front windows of their apartment. We decided to turn the screening into a camping outing/bbq. Watch as our cheeks get red and our fingers go numb while making a Vegan Campfire Stew.

The second video features the sausages once again, along side an exciting new product. The guys at Chicago Soydairy were so nice to surprise us with a sample of their new, improved and stretchy Mozzarella Vegan Teese (not yet in stores). We shredded it up and made a Vegan Philly Cheesesteak!

That sandwich was HUGE! Like a Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable style hoagie. I am sure purists may frown upon our interpretation of the Philadelphia classic, but we know something is good when a week later our apartment still smells like onions :) We had a blast in the City of Brotherly Love last fall. Read about it in our Mid-Atlantic Vegan Dining Adventures post. Highlights included ringing the Liberty Bell and filling up on vegan dim sum at Kingdom of Vegetarians Restaurant… but sadly no vegan cheesesteaks. Any one know where you can get one when in Philly?
